A two-minute video every month: where you rank, what changed, what’s next
You shouldn’t need a dashboard to know whether this is working. Once a month I record my screen searching your trade in your town and show you the result, side by side with where you started.
What’s in it
- The search. I type the search we agreed on, from your town, signed out, and you watch where your listing comes up. No spreadsheet, no “visibility score.” The actual result a customer would see.
- Then and now. The screenshot from day one next to this month’s. If you moved from eleventh to fifth, you see it. If you didn’t move, you see that too.
- Reviews. How many came in, from which jobs, and whether the crew is sending the text. This is the number that slips first when a business gets busy.
- What I changed. Every edit to the listing that month, in plain words. Nothing happens to your listing that isn’t in this list.
- What’s next and what I need from you. Usually photos from a particular kind of job, or an answer to a question about a service.
Why a video
Because you’ll watch it. A two-minute recording you can play on your phone between jobs gets watched; a PDF with charts gets filed. I’ve spent the last two years making videos that get strangers to act, and the one lesson that carries over is that showing beats telling. You see my screen, you see the search, you see your name.
Day one: the benchmark
Before I change anything, I take the first set of screenshots: the agreed search, a couple of related ones, the three companies above you with their review counts, and your listing as it stands. That’s the “before.” Every month after that is measured against it, the same search from the same place. Rankings wobble a little day to day, which is why it’s always the same search, checked the same way, on a schedule.
When it isn’t working
I say so. If three months in you’re stuck at sixth, the video says you’re stuck at sixth, here’s what I think is holding it, and here’s what I’m changing. Sometimes the honest answer is that the search we picked is too crowded and we should win a narrower one first. You’ll hear that from me before you have to ask. And if it’s not in the top three in 90 days, the guarantee applies.
